DevHook

Devhook is a bitch to setup if you’re going to emulate firmware 3.0x.  Here’s a basic howto on what to do, assuming you have SE-C, otherwise, this might vary.:

1) Get PSARDumper 2 from pspupdates.qj.net (or dl.qj.net)

2) Get the 3.x update eboot.pbp, and devhook 0.51.0100 and extract all the files to the root of the memory stick. (If the GAME folder is running 2.71 kernel mode homebrew, put the launcher in GAME150 instead.  You can check this in recovery -> Configuration.)

3) Get PBP Unpacker or PSPBrew and extract the DATA.PSAR out of the eboot.pbp.

4) Copy the DATA.PSAR to the root of your memory stick.

5) Get X-Flash (we’re not gona flash anything)

6) Copy X-Flash to your memory stick and make a FULL firmware dump (its number 13 or something).

7) To exit X-Flash, hold the home button in until the thing at the bottom fills up with yellow (red turns off the psp)

8) Make sure PSARDumper and crap is on the memory stick and start it.

9) Make a firmware dump that is encrypted and has sigcheck (X from what i remember)

10) On the root of your memory stick there will be a folder ‘f0′. Copy the entire contents of that to ms0:/dh/301/.  When a box comes up asking to overwrite stuff, say yes to all.

11) Go to the XFlash folder on your memory stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/X-FLASH or something.  Not the one with the %)

12) Go into the subfolder called ‘Xflash’ and into the subfolder called dump.

13) Disregard the flash0 folder.  Copy the contents of the flash1 folder to ms0:/dh/301/f1

14) Start devhook and test it out (remember to change the firmware in the menu and such).

15) If it works, congratulations, otherwise, get help at pspupdates.qj.net or the maxconsole forums.

NOTE: If you have a 32mb stick, this WILL NOT WORK.  It wont fit by a long shot.

NOTE2:  Don’t even bother downloading a pre-prepared dump of firmware 3.x for step 9 because firmwares 2.8x and above require the dumps to be individual for each and every psp.

NOTE3:  In devhook while emulating 3.x at the moment, there are a few issues.  For me, the Web browser gives a BSOD, and the system settings gives a BSOD.  From a brief look, the camera feature appears (just guessing, i don’t have the actual camera myself).

The only things that have changed in 3.x are:

The new camera feature

The fancy visualisers (pic below).

PSP-PS3 connectivity.

PS1 Emulation.

Grand Theft Auto

I’ve been playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City stories in 2.71 SE-C lately, with EdisonCarter’s CheatDevice PRX loaded.  The game has been pretty good so far, and there have been a few quirks along the way, one of which is the following:  I had a 2 star wanted level and was going on a killing spree down the highway on the first island.  So i decide to get out of my car and face the cops (with Infinite Health & Armor of course), and at that precise moment a paramedic arrives for the people i’ve beaten to a bloody pulp.  The cop was walking towards me and the paramedic was walking towards the people who were dying.  The cop swung his baton and hit the paramedic accidentally, the next thing that happened was an all out fight between the cop and the paramedic.  I’ve also managed to do this on GTA:SA one day when i had started a fire and the fire dept shown up.  For some reason the paramedics shown up as well, and the exact same thing happened.  The paramedic ran into the firefighter, the firefighter fought back and the paramedic started beating the firefighter with a shovel.  Pretty Funny.  Here are some pictures of the fight (albeit, not very good).

Overall, it was pretty cool.  The first picture was overwritten when i took a screenshot of myself on a jetski:

Thats all for today.

First PSP Modification

Well, in the last hour or so i’ve completed my first psp modification, albeit a very simple one.  It involved just putting a PS2 Analog stick onto the psp, replacing the small nub.  If you wish to attempt this yourself, you will need a PS1 or PS2 controller that has the sticks (and preferably a broken one, cause you wont be able to put it back together).  Its pretty simple: Remove all the screws on the back of the controller, pull out one of the sticks and then sand it back until the part in the middle is longer than the part on the outside (this is to allow movement).  After I completed it, the psp looked as follows:

Even though the picture isn’t clear, you get the point.  There are a few problems with this course of action though.  One of which is that the D-Pad is a pain in the ass to use, although, this can be remedied (a little) by sanding the ‘ring’ on the outside of the stick back smaller (but dont touch the size of the hole).

My controller after I was done.

I tested how the analog stick fared in a Medium difficulty race on Need for Speed: Most Wanted with my BMW M5 GTR I.  First problem was that if i needed to activate slow-mo mode, it would be very had to touch ‘down’ button on the D-Pad.  Another side effect i found was that the original psp nub (no matter how small it is) offered greater handling than the PS2 counterpart.

Very bad picture of how the Analog stick should look like after you’re done.

Overall, I think i might stick with the original PSP nub until i get enough time (and the balls) to do the harder mods that involve replacing the PSP nub with the PS2 one.  The difference with this mod and them is that it involves soldering a few things to the psp PCB, and that i reckon it’d fare a lot better than the psp nub under the conditions that if it were attached to the side of the psp.  Another possible side effect of doing the mod mentioned above, is that i’ve read on the official sony forums (http://boardsus.playstation.com) that putting an analog stick the size of the one shown above, is that it might put more strain on the actual stick inside the psp and cause it to snap off, although, I do think that would be very doubtful.

PSP Specs:

2.71 Running SE-C

Non-TA-082 Board.

Edit:

I just realised you have to shave off the ‘Y’ looking bits ’supporting’ the thing that connects to the actual stick inside the psp.  This seems to improve handling in NFS:MW a lot more.
